Duties: Metal Polishing is a highly skilled role, particularly within Samuel Heath & Sons. There are a number of machines that training is carried out on e.g. twin spindle polishing lathes, upright and flatbed linishers and degreasing machines. As well as training on these specific machines there are quite literally thousands of different components all of which have their own unique finishing qualities. Training will also cover the various standards and qualities required across our extensive range of products, mechanical operation of polishing and linishing machines, which include machine setting and changing of bands and mops and their dressing. Duties: The job is to work in our NDT laboratories (Reporting to the NDT supervisor) performing magnetic particle inspection on Aerospace and Defence components for the likes of RR & BAe systems. This will entail using a magnetic particle bench to magnetise the components under test and use a fluorescent ink under UV lighting to ascertain if components are free of flaws, likely to impair their subsequent use. Then sign them off as fit to be used on planes carrying people and various defence articles used in the field. Working with four other members of staff in the NDT labs, the idea would be over a period of 12 months, or so, to train up to obtain an external, nationally recognised, qualification in NDT and become a fully functioning qualified member of the team, with the long term goal of staying on at Ashton and Moore, possibly training up on other NDT processes, if applicable/able.

Skills required: The person must be motivated, with a good work ethic, intelligent, focused and with an eye for detail. Able to operate standard computer packages and maintain detailed records, as well as routine testing and maintenance of the equipment. They must be able to follow instruction and organise their work to get the job done. They will also be involved in external audits, to which the department is regularly subjected. This is a frenetic, customer led, service environment.
